Arbitration on Claims Under
The Texas Securities Act
The capital of Texas, Austin is also the county seat of Travis County. The Colorado River runs through Austin, and several man-made lakes are located within the city’s boundaries. What began in the 1830s as a village named Waterloo is now a vibrant hub of high-tech and biotech companies, home to the Texas State Capitol, the University of Texas at Austin, and close to 200 live music venues that have earned the city the title of “Live Music Capital of the World.”
In 1839, the city of Waterloo was selected to become the capital of the newly created Republic of Texas; its name was changed to Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin, who had brought with him some of the earliest colonists in the area and became known as the “Father of Texas.” When the Republic of Texas became part of the United States in 1845, the state’s constitution listed Austin as the new state capital. Over time, as Austin became a major trading center, the city’s population continued to grow.
Current-day Austin has also been dubbed “Silicon Hills,” for the concentration of high technology and biotech companies that now operate in the area. Dell, Inc., for example, is headquartered in Round Rock, which is part of the broader Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metropolitan area. Whole Foods Market was founded and is still headquartered in Austin.
Among the city’s landmarks are the Austonian, a skyscraper completed in 2009; the Driskill Hotel, which was built in 1886; and the historic “Moonlight Towers” that still illuminate parts of the downtown at night. More that 118,000 students are enrolled in Austin’s public and private colleges and universities, including the University of Texas. While Austin’s population is estimated to be over 786,000, the estimated population of its broader metropolitan area reaches more than 1.7 million.
Austin has a substantial financial sector with numerous stockbrokers and financial services available including Raymond James, Ameriprise, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Charles Schwab, UBS, Waterhouse, and many more.
